Maximizing Recovery: Moxibustion The Game Changer

Maximizing Recovery: Moxibustion The Game Changer

Having the same post-workout tightness or old injury flareups? Do you find yourself going through the same recovery process everytime only to find yourself right back where you started with an old injury? Dealing with chronic pain that never goes away is definitely not normal. Whether you’re into sports, martial arts, strength training - whatever gets your body to its limits - there’s a powerful recovery method you may not have considered yet. It's called moxibustion.

Moxibustion is a time-tested therapy from Chinese medicine that's been used for thousands of years. Despite its long-standing roots, it's still relatively unknown in most sports medicine circles.

Moxibustion applied to the back (burning of rolled mugwort leaf)

Most athletes are familiar with massage, cupping, taping, ice or heat as part of their recovery process. If all you experience is some light muscle soreness, then your body is still relatively healthy and experiencing normal recovery, thus there’s no need to change things up. But if you're dealing with recurring abnormal pain or lingering injuries—like nerve discomfort, an old ACL tear, or a tendon that keeps flaring up—you might need a deeper, more targeted form of healing.

Let’s consider a ligament/tendon strain for example. Sometimes these injuries never fully heal and become weak points that flare up with heavy use. Massage can help, but often requires working through multiple tissue layers—compressing blood vessels, fascia, and surrounding muscles—just to reach the injury. That can cause additional trauma in otherwise healthy areas, making recovery slower and more energy-intensive.

Now imagine a treatment that directly targets the injured tendon or ligament without disturbing the surrounding tissue. That’s where acupuncture and moxibustion come in—offering a smarter, more efficient path to healing.

THE LIMITS OF HEAT AND ICE

Ice and heat can feel good, but they have limitations. For one, they struggle to reach deeper tissues. And in the case of cold therapy, you're often muting the inflammatory response that’s actually necessary for healing. Think of it like banging your thumb—it swells for a reason. That inflammation brings blood to the area, supporting tissue repair. Suppress that process too soon, and you may be cutting healing short.

HOW MOXIBUSTION WORKS

Moxibustion involves applying therapeutic heat to acupuncture points using a specialized herb (commonly mugwort) that’s burned in a controlled way to warm the body without damaging the skin. This targeted heat helps stimulate circulation, improve energy flow, and activate internal organs associated with tissue healing:

Tendons and ligaments = Liver

Muscles = Spleen

Bones and nerves = Kidneys

By activating these systems, we help the body heal the problem area from within, instead of causing trauma to the surrounding tissue. This leads to a more efficient form of healing. You feel better, with less side effects.

Acupuncture vs. Moxibustion

Acupuncture includes both traditional methods and dry needling. Dry needling is effective for directly targeting specific muscles or tendons, especially in acute injuries. But with chronic issues that resist healing, traditional acupuncture often works better by stimulating organ functions that drive circulation and regeneration—even from points distant from the pain site.

If your recovery is being held back by stress, poor sleep, or a demanding schedule, traditional acupuncture may be just what you need to slow down your nervous system and allow proper healing to begin.

When acupuncture alone doesn’t seem to deliver long-term results—meaning symptoms return once treatment ends—that’s when moxibustion may be more effective. By delivering deep-penetrating heat, moxibustion helps kickstart healing in stubborn, stagnant areas where other treatments fall short.

EFFICIENT HEALING MATTERS

Efficiency is everything when it comes to recovery. Many of my athletic clients are surprised at how fast and gentle these treatments are—and even more impressed with how quickly they feel relief. Compared to massage, there’s less post-treatment swelling and inflammation, because we’re not overworking the body. Instead, we use fewer resources and deliver more targeted healing.

SO WHICH IS RIGHT FOR YOU?

Tips To Boost Your Immune System

Tips To Boost Your Immune System

With global health warnings like Mpox on the rise, and lingering reports of covid-19, you might be interested in having a few tips and tricks to boost your immune system naturally. The extra 10-15% boost may be the differentiator between feeling a bit off vs. being completely wiped out. Here we will share a few tips you can do at home to boost your immune system, along with services our expert acupuncturists at AcuSoul provide to address the immune system issues as quickly as possible.

Add An Extra Layer

Believe it or not, we are already in fall as of August 8th, 2024 according to the Chinese Lunar Calendar. What this means is that as the seasons begin to change, you may want to layer up in the colder evenings, along with changing your diet to be more in alignment with the cooler months of fall. Remember, the body is naturally at 36.8°C, which is usually warmer than the temperature outside, so adding an extra layer as the temperature dips at night will only make less work for your body. This is especially important if you’ve had a stressful day in the office, or an exhausting day of walking while travelling or touring a city. When your body is run down, it’s easier for viruses to invade. It’s also easier for viruses to survive in cooler weather.

Change Your Diet According To The Season

As we trail out of summer, we may be hanging on to certain eating habits during the warmer climate that don’t necessarily translate to better health in the fall. You might be having smoothies with ice, raw fruit, or eating lots of raw salads and feeling great during the summer. As we switch into fall, some people notice they all of a sudden start to get looser bowel movements, and indigestion with excess raw food intake. Food in this cold state tends to take more energy from our digestive system in order to process into nutrients than if we had a warm cooked meal. If you’re looking for a way to boost your immunity, this is one tip you cannot skip.

If you’re already under a serious viral attack, you are avoiding people, but not sure what to make at home to feel better. I recommend chicken noodle soup for the following reasons:

  • Chicken - is warming, and low in fat, and translates to the body warming up faster to fight off a cold.

  • Thyme, oregano are spices that are found in chicken noodle soup, which again help to warm the body, and circulate the blood.

  • Root vegetables, and simple carbohydrates - such as carrots, and noodles - give the body fuel to perform basic functions efficiently.

Again, the body is naturally warm at 36.8°C, by eating warm food, it takes less energy from the body to maintain this temperature. This then leaves more resources for maintaining your body’s immune system.

Add Some Spice

Just like how Starbucks offers the pumpkin spice latte during fall, your body will benefit by consuming more ginger, cinnamon, oregano, thyme, garlic, cloves, fennel, black pepper, and onions. You can try ginger tea, or apple cider with a cinnamon stick. You can also just add these spices to your cooking, and enjoy the added kick, while they optimize your immune system for better health.

Sauna

Try saunas! The othership is just down the street from our clinic, and the warmth helps to open the poors, and get rid of those chills just as they begin. If you’re actually having a fever, it might not be recommended to do the saunas, as this is a later stage of illness, and others might not appreciate you spreading infection. Pre-emptively though, this is a great strategy for improving your immune system.

Moxibustion

Last but not least, moxibustion is the underappreciated side kick to acupuncture; that Robin is to Batman. This technique involving the burning of a specific herb, is particularly effective for boosting the immune system. When you’re in the early stages of feeling a chill, we apply the herb to targeted acupoints without needles and gently heat it with an incense stick. The burning herb is swiftly removed just before it reaches the skin. This process not only enhances circulation but also stimulates the body’s immune response. Our practitioners have utilized this herb in many treatments, and frequently use it themselves to combat chills or fever.

If you’re looking for that extra kick to help boost your immune system, feel free to inquire about moxibustion at our Toronto acupuncture clinic located at 54 Stewart Street, 2nd Floor (King West). We’ll assess your health concerns and provide a treatment tailored to your individual needs.

Cancer, Chemo & Acupuncture

Cancer, Chemo & Acupuncture

Going through cancer can feel like a very stressful, exhausting, and physically painful experience. It may not be the cure, but acupuncture can make your cancer journey a whole lot better. From managing fatigue, reducing inflammation, and alleviating pain, acupuncture can be a great resource for those going through chemotherapy treatments. How, you might wonder?

Acupuncture works by stimulating the body's nervous system to respond to the acupuncture needles depending on where they are placed. Each point elicits a different response, thereby allowing your practitioner to guide the body in reducing your pain, promoting circulation, or reducing inflammation. In addition, acupuncture may help regulate dopamine production allowing the body to relax, and help your mood[1]. When your body’s less stressed, your immune system may be able to respond better[2,3].

Does it matter what type of cancer you have?

Yes, and no. Regardless of what type of cancer you have, acupuncture may help alleviate your symptoms. However, knowing what type of cancer you have can allow the practitioner to also focus the treatment on treating the cancer as well. Also, knowing what stage of cancer you are in, whether that is stage 1, 2, 3, or 4, will be helpful in determining how gentle or strong of a treatment your body can handle. Usually we perform a gentler treatment for more advanced stages of cancer.

What symptoms can acupuncture help with?

When treating symptoms related to cancer or effects of chemo, some individuals can show up with heightened levels of inflammation. This can be burning eyes, dry mouth, or even mouth ulcers. Acupuncture can be done to reduce inflammatory effects of the chemotherapy, and have you feeling better and more balanced as you go through chemotherapy treatments.

Some individuals may experience fatigue, or tightness in the neck and shoulders. In fact, these symptoms can be related, in that when our circulation is poor, we feel fatigue and tightness. By improving circulation in the body, acupuncture can help you feel more energetic, and less tense.

Nausea, vomiting, & diarrhea

These symptoms are a result of a heightened level of inflammation in the body. Often times by clearing away the heat from the body, or reducing inflammatory levels internally, these symptoms tend to subside as well.

How can treatments address cancer?

In addition to alleviating symptoms, there may be days where the majority of symptoms are at bay, and under control.

In those situations there is an opportunity to treat the actual cancer with a slightly different therapy called moxibustion. Moxibustion is where we would apply a herb to the acupoints and burn it. In doing so, this adds an element of heat to promote blood circulation in the organs. For example if you have colon cancer, we could target points that relate to the large intestine. Alternatively, for liver tumors, we would target acupoints that affect the liver.

You can think of it like we are trying to accelerate the immune response, and removal of cancer cells from the organ. Don’t worry, the burning herb is extinguished before it makes direct contact with the skin, thereby preventing burns & scalds. This type of therapy, if practiced correctly, can be very gentle and soothing.

So if you're struggling with chemo, or just want to overall feel better through your cancer journey, consider adding acupuncture & moxibustion to your regimen.
